About Blue Economy Labs

UNESCO has designated 2021-2030 as the “Ocean Decade,” calling for global action to improve humanity’s relationship with the ocean. The “Ocean Decade Challenge 10” focuses on building an ocean-literate society where marine ecosystems are understood, valued, and protected (IOC/UNESCO, 2024).
Latin America, with its vast 240,000 km of coastline, depends heavily on the ocean—27% of its population relies directly or indirectly on marine resources. Sustainable fisheries, renewable energy, and ecotourism have boosted employment, improved sanitation, and strengthened resilience while tackling poverty and pollution.

Chile and Colombia are positioning themselves as key players in the blue economy. Chile, with thousands of kilometers of Pacific coastline, and Colombia, strategically located between the Pacific and the Caribbean, are making strides to enhance their international role in this field.
But for a truly sustainable future, education and industry must align.

That’s why we’re building collaboration between vocational training institutions in Colombia, Chile, Spain, and Germany-linking expertise in green and blue economy sectors with real-world industry needs.
The result? Students equipped to forge a future in the maritime sector and businesses with the skilled workforce they require.
